Abstract.

Summary. The study offers a retrospective cross-section of the ancient question of human dignity in correlation to the theme of providing care and medical treatment for the ailing. As his starting point the author uses biblical assertions on the image and likeness of God in man, and then sheds some light on the status of the so-called “limited person” and on mental illnesses. His treatise on the traditional roles of the priest and the medical doctor leads him to the question of modern “rational” medicine within the context of the relationship between culture, science, medicine, and the Church. Being reminiscent of the role and the significance of the Byzantine hospital and the mystery of healing throughout history, he sheds light on the relationship between contemporary Orthodoxy and medicine. The theme of spiritual healing is then being treated through the perspective of hagiography – through the saintly figures of the Church, the figures of the intercessors (the priests-healers), the holy unmercenaries, the holy healers, and the shrines of the holy wonderworkers. Popular piety and liturgical hymns are also being touched upon, as well as the significance of the Holy Liturgy in relation to healings which are offered through the Holy Sacraments, especially through Unction, as well as other holy rites which are being performed for the good health of the believers. Finally, the author analyses the actual situation as well as the need for new solutions regarding the actual implementation of this Holy Sacrament.
