Summary. The study sheds a new light on the Vita of St Symeon the New Theologian and his so-called monastic reforms. Niketas Sthetatos composed Vita in which he minimized every element of political and ecclesiastical controversy in Symeon’s life for the purpose of rehabilitating a figure who even in the уеаг of the 1054 could rise controversial feelings The first apparent detail dealt with St Symeon aristocratic background. His progress in his imperial court career is inevitably linked with his noble ties as well as in monastic settlement. Symeon’s unsteady progress towards embracing the monastic life is related to the changes at the imperial court. The monastic reforms are second important detail in Vita of St Symeon. Niketas described St Symeon as monastic reformer of St i Vlamas monastery which is a hagiographical topos for glorification of a saint. In reality, St Symeon has not succeeded in monastic reforms, due to him promulgated old desert rule that was based on the total obedience to the spiritual father. There are three aspects of his original contribution to the monastic program: his desire to see monasticism as ecstatic and visionary; his aspiration to propagate his teacher’s emotive psychical energy in the alfective spiritual life; and lastly, his attempt to redefine the power structure in aristocratic foundations. St Symeon was a mystic (and not monastic reformer) and precursor of hesychasm.
