The Divine Council of Psalm 82 in the Light of the Baal Cycle

This paper examines the motif of the divine council in the Baal Cycle and its reception in biblical Psalm 82. A comparative analysis of the terminology and structure of both texts reveals that Psalm 82 polemically adopts and transforms this motif, presenting the Lord as the supreme judge who condemns the Canaanite deities for their injustice. While the Baal Cycle depicts the divine council as a hierarchically organized system in which El holds sovereign authority, Psalm 82 redefines this structure by dismantling its tiers and elevating the God of Israel as the sole sovereign ruler of heaven and earth. This adaptation reflects broader theological and sociocultural developments that contribute to the monotheistic understanding of God in Israel.
