The Communion Hymn in the Contemporary Liturgical Practice of the Serbian Orthodox Church

Following the example of Jewish worship, the early Church had both psalms and singing as the basis of the divine service content. The time when the priests and the faithful received communion was filled with a melodic background composed of psalms. This liturgical segment got the name communion hymn (serb. pričasten; gr. koinonikon). Through the historical development of liturgical practice, more precisely with the cessation of communion of the faithful, from the entire psalm that was sung, communion psalm was reduced to one verse. Current liturgical practice ignores this important moment and replaces it with some other liturgical element or arbitrarily replaces the psalms with other texts. This violates not only the communion hymn, but also, indirectly, communion as the central event of the Holy Liturgy, with which the communion
hymn is inextricably related.
